Severe Event Reports
A cold winter's morning...2003
Sunday August 10th 2003.
The forecast for the Yarra Valley (Victorian Central Region) was
for widespread morning frost and some valley fogs in the morning, then a
cool to cold and mostly sunny day to follow with light variable wind.
There were some very low overnight minimums recorded, reaching 1°C here
(Chirnside Park), -1.1°C at Yarra Glen and when I jumped in the car at 6.30 a.m. it was foggy,
some ice on the car and the lawns were very wet but not frosted. As I
approached Lilydale the fog cleared but I was in heavy fog again at Coldstream. I
decided that there would not be any decent photo opportunities or
observation interest in the thick of this fog so I proceeded to higher
ground, ending up in Yarra Glen. To the NW of Yarra Glen is a range of
hills that I hoped would provide a decent vantage point to observe some
decent frost and perhaps some views above the fog line.
Driving up Skyline Drive I was rewarded with fantastic Dawn views as I
emerged above the fog. The images speak for themselves! I moved through
different vantage points and then proceeded to Sugarloaf Reservoir, as I
was fairly certain that the frosts would be quite heavy here, and they
were. Roadside gutter puddles were frozen and the pastures were
snow-white. I then moved down through Yarra Glen again and on the way
through some back road I rounded a corner to be faced with sunrays being
thrown through the fog into the tree-line ahead, the fog was streaming
through the trees and was an incredible sight.
After two hours I headed back home via
Coldstream East and watched the southern flank of the fog bank moving
north, a sight that was keenly observed not only by me but by the local
cattle as well!
I hope you enjoy the images!
