Lady
Lake - Central Plateau
April 10th 2006
This walk, on Higgs
Track, goes from the car park to the rim of the escarpment, through a
beautiful rain forest of old Myrtles, Sassafras and ferns.
Higgs Track continues on
to Lake Mackenzie - the hydro electric lake near Devils Gullet. The
track continues on to the Walls of Jerusalem.
The trip to Lady Lake is
almost 4 kilometres each way and the track climbs uphill at a steep but
manageable rate. Once reaching the top of the escarpment there are
superb views around the Tiers to Mother Cummings Peak. At the top on
the plain, the track becomes less clear but the plain is magnificent,
laden with pools and native wildflowers, mosses and the r3built settlers
hut. Around the side of the hill is Lady Lake, and the terrain
immediately around the lake is another one of those mosaics of colour
which are abundant throughout the wilderness areas of Tasmania.
We tackled the walk on a
clear but overcast day, the mountain plain temperature was 10C with no
wind at all.

The Climb
The climb is steady and we carried full
packs, as we needed to condition ourselves for the upcoming 5 day
Overland Trek. It was hard going but the reward on the plain was worth
it!

The Mountain Top
and Lady Lake
The views from the mountain plain are amazing, taking in the Great
Western Tiers, Mother Cummings Peak and the Meander Valley below.

Below: the recently rebuilt hut will accommodate around 10 walkers or
fisher-people, and the plain provided me with some great photographic
opportunities, with wildflowers blooming and the beautiful network of
small ponds and rivulets streaking across the plain.
