The Cannibal RUN! - General Discussion

Commencing Nov 17th a group of Tasmanian bushwalkers embark on an epic journey to retrace the steps of convict and self-confessed cannibal Alexander Pearce through some of the most inhospitable and treacherous Tasmanian wilderness imagineable, from Coal Head at Macquarie Harbour to the junction of the Ouse and Shannon Rivers. Please join in the discussion as we preview and review this amazing expedition. There will also be updates coming in from the crew as the expedition progresses (via Satellite phone).

Hi Cindy. Great effort ,the fact you only traveled just over 1km on some days tells me how tough of going it is.
I though you were mad before the start now I know. The spirit you guys carry is in true digger style and everyone who knows you should be very proud of your achievements.
Spot has been fantastic, maybe your employer should put one on you full time? Now that would be interesting especially when your on your Beamer!!

Cant wait for the pics and the stories .

Hi everyone

I just spoke to the team, will post the feedback onto the web site shortly, they're doing well!

I am actually going to see them (it's a surprise) for breakfast tomorrow morning, will set off from home about 0430-0500hrs as they are camped up on Bradys. If any family members talk to the guys this evening please don't mention I'm coming, I intend to ambush them on video camera!

Taking some fresh supplies, e.g. fruit etc as a treat. Bit too early in the day for a beer unfortunately, although Jason is part of the team so you never know!

Cheers.

Hi guys, just checking in on you after a lovely sleep in in my warm bed only to see that you have been through rain, hail and snow to get to where you are. Are you sure that we are related????????? I was really surprised at how far you have travelled in the past couple of days - are you all sprinting now you have more food supplies and the end is in sight. Hope you enjoyed your breakfast surprise this morning - another questionable person getting up at that hour. Not long to go now. Saw it was posted yesterday that you are hoping to complete trek by Tuesday. That's fantastic going. Look forward to seeing you then. Love yas

Hi Team
I couldn't believe it when I got a phone call from the team on Friday to wish me a happy birthday - unbelievable to think they knew what month or what day it was let alone to remember my birthday - it made my day. Particularly as I was crook with the dreaded lurgy all week it was certainly a nice surprise. The end is now in sight and the champagne will flow. Well done everyone. Ceri

Hi Guys, how exciting/sad it must be for you all to know that you have actually accomplished what you set out to achieve but now it is all coming to an end. What an amazing trek you have been on. For those of us waiting patiently at home, we can hardly wait to hear of your adventures and to see the many thousands of pics that I am sure that you have. Enjoy your walk into Ouse tomorrow - I hear that the forcast is for rain! Now doesn't that make a nice change  Hurry home I am sick of this horrid weather and I am sure that the sun is just waiting for you all to be back at work before it comes out again. Y'all take care now. xxx G

Yes it looks like they should finish this afternoon. I was expecting a call at 7pm last night from them to confirm but didn't hear from them, perhaps they have called family directly I don't know. Anyway, it will be great to have them back and after seeing them on Sunday, the elation they'll experience in seeing family, having a hot shower and finding a mattress (and having a beer) will be memorable!

Over coming days the photographs and graphs, maps and statistics will be coming through, as well as comments and feedback from the team, so keep checking!

Well done TEAM! A Fantastic Effort! Gee, the kilos you guys have lost would make a juicy cannibal! Bet the beer/wine goes down well....Boags or Cascade guys?

I can just imagine Paul starting a discussion along the lines....OK, we did it easily team....not as bad as we expected was it...weather rather kind to us....horizontal scrub easy to cross....not the challege we though....well, we need a decent challenge now....Davey to Strahan, just a walk in the park......Flinders Island really a bit of a weekend stroll on a farm....Cannibal Run....well, its wet my appetite.....What about the Kokoda in record time during the monsoon season???

No, Maureen....I'm serious....its time we got serious about this bush walking!

Looking forward to the pics, stories, jokes, 1st aid, bed time stories etc

WE DID IT - and safely.
I have had 5 days rest since arriving home, I really needed it. ( remember I'm the "old guy" of the team.)

I want to thank everyone who supported our team - during planning/preperation, getting underway at Strahan, support at the Lyall Highway, support at McQuires Marsh, support at Derwent Bridge, support on the Forum and most of all, your support which we were carrying with us as we undertook this expedition. Without it we may not have been successfull.
I will catch up with you all in the near future and thank you personally - too many to name individually but I am refering to you.

This was an amazing expedition. The challenges of the terrain, vegetation, weather conditions and navigation, plus the physicall and mental aspects were truly unbelievable. We were faced with very dangerous situations almost daily.

I find it very difficult to comprehend how Mr Alexander Pearce and his party managed to successfully undertake this expedition in 1822 - they had no luxurys such as we did - i.e. clothes, footwear, shelter, food, maps, compass, electronic devices etc.
Any family decendants of Mr Alexander Pearce and his party should hold thier heads high - "be very proud of thier achievement of getting from Coal Head in Macquarie Harbour, to settled lands at the Ouse / Shannon River junction area".

To Su, Cyn, Maur, Honey, Simon - what a team. You are exceptional people -your caring, support, team skills, attitude, compassion and understanding are beyond belief. I would walk the earth with you. ( now there's a thought for our next adventure !!!!)

Paul.
Paul

Check out the fantastic Podcast by Simon Morris at the
Paddy Pallin website. A great verbal account of the highs
and lows of the journey complete with a history lesson.
Also, the expedition should be in the next Australian
Geographic magazine.
Cheers Jason...
