Daily Weather Stuff 2010 - for the 'in-between' days

Postby Michael Fewings on Fri Jan 01, 2010 5:10 pm

Happy new year to all and what a present we had last night for the new year.

8mm of rain and up to pea sized hail all in about 5 minutes.

Lightning strikes within a km and lots of lightning flashes (about 5 seconds apart at one stage overhead)

Looks like there were spotty falls around with most places with 6mm and occasionally more.

Pretty good based on an original forecast of fine. But really have to agree with the BOM and their forecast. A bit more heating than expected in the lower levels and it broke through. The trough formed quite a productive line all the way from Victoria down.

Anyone else have a good show last night that wasn't man made :)

Photos for all (pretty ordinary but they are hand held QFR - quick finger reflex so not a bad outcome really)

The last one was about 1.5 km away just over the hill. Looks like a day time photo.

WW they are very nice pics.

What a bugger about the focus on the 2 beauties. Well at least it is not the one that got away with no evidence!! We know what could have been.

They show up the very heavy rain shaft well.

Nice stuff WW, Mike and Kelly, I was at a party in Norwood, an elevated position so we could see a lot of CC and some CG action, but mostly distant strobing to the west and south. Glad you had a better show down that way.

Big weather event coming up on Sunday to Monday.

Low, winds, rain and likely some thunderstorms to proceed it all.

Looks like all models are now agreeing with a low forming right over the top of Tassie and moving NE from there. Should be some ripper winds on the west coast or NW coast or possibly in the SE if the low forms further east than currently expected.

Won't start a thread on it just yet. Give the models one more day to finalise themselves for the trip.

Might get around 25 mm from this event down this way.

Looks pretty good for the top of the island. Might slow down a few of the fires burning but will leave that for another forum thread.

What are other Peoples thoughts about the amount of rain they will get?

The BOM website sows that Mt Barrow has recieved 75mm since 9am. Do you think that this is accurate?

great photos guys!!!it was an awesome week of storms!
Raining here steady with 0.6mm in last 10min ,very nice to hear after these hot dry days,I think your right MF 20-30mm not out of the question with a slow moving rain band could be some good totals,I think its the nights that are the most uncomfortable 23.8here last night and 32.8degrees today .

well. that was more than I though. Nice to have it that way a well.

Ended up with 35.8mm this morning (7am) and 76mm for the year to date.

The last few days of heat have just knocked off most of the green grass around here but it was not past recovery which means another couple of weeks of green grass if it does not rain again before then.

Just read your post TonyO and amazing that grove got 44mm.
