STORMPLANET - Severe Event Reports

December 3rd & 4th 2003
Central & Nth Central Districts, Victoria.

December 3rd | December 4th

Cloud across VIC, NSW and QLD formed a broad trough causing heavy rain and widespread thunderstorms. The thunderstorms continued throughout eastern and northern VIC as a broad trough of low pressure over eastern Australia tapped into a plentiful supply of moisture from the northeast. A Severe Thunderstorm Advice was issued for all districts of VIC, except the Western. The heaviest 24 hour totals in VIC on Tuesday were 120mm at Wonnangatta River, and 108mm at Bulleen which caused flash flooding. Melbourne was again the target of many storms as the near stationary trough combined with the sea breeze to set up a convergence zone northwest of the city. Northwesterly middle level winds then pushed the storms across the city. The heaviest rain total to 3:30pm was 17mm at Mt Moornapa, however significantly higher totals will be recorded to 9am.

I was positioned in an area bordered by Healesville, Yarra Glen and Coldstream. No severe storms were observed today but some cells near Healesville produced heavy rain and some nice photographic opportunities.

Some interesting cloud structures were observed and some photogenic rain bases photographed. There was some visible lightning, and a lot of thunder as the cell depicted in the above radar moved through near Healesville. Rain was very heavy however no hail was observed.

December 4th

A broad, slow moving trough, combined with an atmosphere rich in moisture that flowed in from the tropics, continued to trigger widespread severe thunderstorms across eastern states. There was very intense rainfall in most storms and large hail with wind squalls in some. The highest falls were centered around the NSW Riverina, Central West and VIC Northern Country, North Central and Central districts. To 9am Thursday, Tottenham (NSW) received 74.6mm and Mt Baw Baw (VIC) 50mm. To 3pm, Mildura (SW NSW) scored 49.6mm with 23.2mm falling in just 10 minutes and Badgery's Creek in Sydney recorded a wind gust to 100km/h.

I was chasing in the Central & Nth Central Districts, between Yarra Glen and Seymour. The images below start with a couple taken from Nth Croydon looking east, nice pileus cap on the cell which had delivered heavy rain east of Lilydale, as had an adjacent cell over Mt Dandenong. The remaining images were captured in the Yea & Seymour area.

Here is the radar sequence, it's a 1Mb file.
